Bondi House
Bondi, New South Wales.

Ocean glimpses and district valley views change like film through the layered progression of space; light/shade, ventilation/insulation.

A one hundred year old semi attached workers cottage, nestled in the medium density urban fabric of Bondi had its living spaces opened to accentuate views and enhance energy efficiency. This reorganisation of existing spaces was complimented with the addition of a new ground floor kitchen/living area and on the first level a study, bathroom, small terrace and two bedrooms. The sloping and restricted nature of the site required all materials, rendered masonry and timber, to be hand carried to the site. The light weight highly insulated structure incorporates recycled timber cladding on the first level.

The discrete adjustment made to the Bondi House blends into the urban landscape by contrast, rather than mimicry of historical design. Long slot timber framed windows accentuate the horizontal aspects of the view. Timber weathers silvery grey, mirroring local vegetation.
